Prejudice in the UK makes it harder for Black restaurant owners to succeed. Research showed that there’s a lack of familiarity of Black culture and food, and as a result people are reluctant to try it. Uber Eats had the opportunity to address this, by making unfamiliar foods familiar.

So we partnered with entrepreneur and owner of Prince of Peckham, Clement Ogbannaya, to launch the digital series Eat Like a Local, showcasing chefs and restaurants across the UK.

We showcased restaurants across London, Manchester and Birmingham, including Ethiopian, Nigerian, and Jamaican cuisines among others. Each owner had a unique story to share whether it was Prince who learned to cook at the age of nine and starting a restaurant from his mom’s kitchen, or the Flygerians, two sisters who - inspired by their grandmother- reinvented Fish & Chips the Nigerian way.

This series was one of many initiatives the UK took in furthering Uber’s global commitment to empowering Black-owned businesses, along with the launch of the Black Business Fund in the UK, which gave 35 restaurants a total of £300k in grants.
